  • The Tyre Marking Challenge
    Apply now!

    The brief

Our biggest challenge currently is in converting visitors to our site into clients. With that we have come across a couple of stumbling blocks, one of those is installing confidence in our clients to convert to sales. Traditionally, clients do not have the confidence to choose and select tyres on their own, having spoken to each and every client that we have had to date. It has become clear that we need a way for our clients to communicate with our site, in order for us to help them make an informed decision, or for the site to intuitively guide the decision-making process. A photograph, SDK scan or a Live chat selection could be possible solutions. But our aim here is to find the most hassle-free option for our clients.

    The background

Utyre delivers a Mobile Tyre Fitment service. The core advantages to you as a client are the convenience of our service coming to you, the time that you save by not having to leave the office and the benefit of competitive pricing with free balancing and rotation. In conjunction with our online platform and our mobile fitment vehicle, we are able to supply, fit and balance passenger and light commercial vehicles with a wide selection of the tyres available to the South African market.

    The problem

The side wall of each tyre holds specific demarcation / lettering and numbering that serves as a guide to the tyre's size, load index and speed rating. Utyre is looking to find a way of converting this information into a format that would be able to communicate with our woocommerce backend. Our hope is to find a solution that would recognise these numbers and letters and convert it to a workable solution.

  • Video games in Health care
    Apply now!

    The brief

One innovative application of video games in health care is their use in pain management. The degree of attention needed to play such a game can distract the player from the sensation of pain, a strategy that has been reported and evaluated among paediatric patients.

    The background

The field of health games is going through a combinatorial explosion, where declining technology costs, growing clinical and professional interest in games, and an increasingly refined understanding of what makes health games work are shaping a variety of trends that are shaping the landscape for health games.

    The problem

reHealth Africa is interested in how the use of technologies such as VR-gear or oculus rift can be used in conjunction with orthotic devices to aid in the care and recovering of persons using prosthetics.

  • Genome Mapping of Diabetes Susceptibility Gene
    Apply now!

    The brief

An individual may not be born with a disease but may be at high risk of acquiring it. This is called as genetic predisposition or susceptibility. The genetic susceptibility to a particular disease due to the presence of one or more gene mutations, and/or a combination of alleles need not necessarily be abnormal.

    The background

Diabetes mellitus (or diabetes) is a chronic, lifelong condition that affects your body's ability to use the energy found in food. There are three major types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. All types of diabetes mellitus have something in common. Normally, your body breaks down the sugars and carbohydrates you eat into a special sugar called glucose. Glucose fuels the cells in your body. But the cells need insulin, a hormone, in your bloodstream in order to take in the glucose and use it for energy. With diabetes mellitus, either your body doesn't make enough insulin, it can't use the insulin it does produce, or a combination of both.

    The problem

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 415 million people have diabetes in the world and more than 14 million people in the AFR Region; by 2040 this figure will more than double. There were 2.28 million cases of diabetes in South Africa in 2015. Whilst there are many hereditary diseases, the most common in South Africa is that of Type 1 diabetes. reHealth Africa is interested in finding out what we can learn through Genome Mapping of the diabetes susceptibility gene by using IBM's Watson technology.

  • Analytics-as-a-service for the African continent
    Apply now!

    The brief

Design and implement a fully digital service that uses data from various online sources, applies analytics to it from another online source and in the end provide a digital service for a potential customer. Example: get online data from (TAHMO & the Weather Company) weather stations across the continent, combine with prices of food products grown by farmers and make a prediction for crop value for local farmers delivered on mobile phones.

    The background

The Big Data Lighthouse at Innogy operates a data lake and analytics platform that connect data sources from Innogy and externally with analytical capabilities from 3rd parties, which combined result in an ‘app’ or service that is digitally available for e.g. consumers or businesses. This ranges from energy usage insights, physical asset maintenance insight to churn modelling or call center load predictions (e.g. how many customers will call us when it gets cold).

    The problem

We are interested in what customer segments might be interesting to service with analytics on the African continent. Think out of the box. It is easy to create your own solution, find your own data that is interesting, develop your own algorithm and code your own application. You probably will need to do just that in order to deliver something, but the more valuable part is where you think in terms of how can I enable 1000s others to much quicker deliver their digital services that you could never think of (because they are not your area of expertise) by providing a platform to them that makes it so easy to use that your platform solution becomes the default choice? Look at developer portals from Salesforce, Uber, Apple, Amazon, and so on and see what they did to make any developer that signs on successful….

  • One million active kids
    Apply now!

    The brief

Join us in developing new ways of getting 1 million children active in South African schools.

    The background

In South Africa 2 out of 10 learners are classified as obese which is double the global average. Children have replaced daily physical activities like playing outside with video games and watching more than 3 hours of TV per day resulting in them having a much higher BMI than their physically active peers. To add to the problem many schools no longer have PE/LO as a compulsory subject. reHealth Africa believes that physical exercise is one for the most stimulating and creative lessons for children and that what they learn at school becomes the foundation for much of what they will do in later life. This applies to their physical abilities like balance and coordination. We should inspire children and teachers to value physical exercise lessons as being fun and rewarding.

    The problem

With PE (Physical Exercise) not being available or popular in schools we are interested in developing ways that empower teachers to make PE more fun and inspiring to the children and their parents to make smarter decisions regarding their children’s overall health. We are also interested in understanding how you would define “active” and measure achievements against this.
